There was a comic that I once saw depicting a consultant sitting across the table from a lawyer.  Both had looks of frustration and anguish painted on their faces, staring at each other as if they came from two different planets.  The thoughts written over their heads summed up how they felt about each other in two words apiece – “Techno Weenie!” above the lawyer and “Stuffed Suit!” above the consultant.  Having been an environmental consultant for nearly seven years before going to law school, I can relate to the sentiments felt on both sides of that table.

One of the reasons I went to law school was to try and bridge that gap.  As a consultant I worked with attorneys on a daily basis and wondered about the thought process behind the development of legal strategies and reasons why certain activities were completed or specifically avoided.  With my curiosity sufficiently piqued, I took the plunge, changed hats and became an attorney.

From the start, my legal career has focused almost exclusively on the practice of environmental law and redevelopment.  I have repeatedly found the marriage of the two disciplines, technical and legal, to be an asset with my practice in a multitude of ways.  Whether it is communicating with consultants and engineers, understanding the science behind the analyses, or explaining technical concepts to my clients in ways that they actually understand, I have been able to draw on the knowledge and experiences gained in both professions.  Having ‘walked the walk’ brings a unique skill set to the table – from litigating the liability for co-mingled plumes of contamination, to developing remedial strategies to allow brownfield redevelopment, or meeting with regulators to navigate State and Federal environmental laws and policies – all to the benefit of our clients.
